Updates 4/24/2009

The Califonia Experience 2/27/2009- 4/27/2009
The last two months have been a great reminder to God's providence. Our family has been through so much, yet God is faithful to give us grace and strength through everything. The first weeks spent in anticipation of our son's birth, with many new friends and the Gospel being shared, time seemed to fly by.
When Joshua was born, and then through our loss, we realized anew God's mercies. (Lamentations 3:22-24)Sara and I, along with our children, were not broken by this trial, but instead refreshed in God's lovingkindness. He picked us up and held us close, as we know He is now doing with our son Joshua. We saw the love of the brethren here, with many expressions of Christians love through cards, meals, and gifts. God's people, who are called by His name, are a bright and shining example of what can be accomplished by the love of God expressed through His people.
God has showered us with His love and care each day. I think we all would agree that the Lord is just beginning His work in our lives. We are on a journey that broadens its perspective each day, and brings new trials to conquer through faith. I am sometimes tempted to be content with my walk with the Lord, feeling like I have completed the task, and then I am reminded of where we were just a few months ago, and how I still have to go.(Phil 3:14)
When we first decided to step out into full time work, it was a big stretch of our faith. Yet God was faithful to not give us more than we could bear. He brought us our daily bread, and showed us His will for our lives as we reached out desiring His will more than our own. This is not done by the flesh, nor have we always done everything right, but the Lord knows our hearts, and has allowed us to serve Him in this way.
My prayer is that we are counted faithful, and that in another 6 months that we will not recognize ourselves, that we continue day by day to be conformed more into the image of His son Jesus.(Rom 12:2) May we all stimulate one another to love and good deeds, desiring His will more than our own. I was thinking the other day as a brother asked us about giving up our dreams for God's work.
We told our brother that we didn't consider ourselves to have given up anything. Sure, I would love a farm, animals, and a nice comfortable home. If that is what God wants from me and for me, then that is what I want. However, that is not the case for our famiy. Our calling is to do His will, to make our desires line up with His. (Matthew 6:10)
We should be about our Father's business, a task more easily said than done, and one that we still fail more often than is pleasing to our Master. Yet, the Lord faithfully chastens us(Hebrews 12:6), calling us closer even when we fail, desiring that we not live in past defeat but instead to look to today and what can be done for Him looking forward.
We struggle just like anyone, with different struggles maybe, but the same issues. Yet, all who are called by the name of Christ need not struggle for long. We rest in the freedom of Christ, dying daily to ourselves and living by faith, seeking the Spirit's guidance. It is a race never won until the end of our time, yet a goal to strive for until we reach that heavenly shore.
This journey, while seemingly long at times, is but a glimpse into eternity. In heaven, we will no longer struggle with sin, death, or pain. We will see the fruit of our service, and look into our Savior's face, never again to displease Him. May we
walk each day, by His strength, as if this were our last day on this earth. It may very well be today. I am reminded that I must live today as if it were the last.
As I look at the work here, of the faithful saints that desire to be His witnesses, to shepherd His flock, and to serve their Master in so many ways, I am humbled. I see that the high profile that some give to the work of the evangelist is wrong. We are no different than the teacher, those faithful in hospitality, those who give, those who do all the silent jobs in the background, never desiring man's praise but God's.
We are privileged to preach the Gospel every day and to be used to help equip the saints, but it is no work of our hands, but the Potter's hands. He has given gifts to all His people, and if the whole body an eye, where would the hearing be? There are many gifts, and some more visible, but none more important. They all just point to the head, Christ Jesus our Lord. He alone is worthy of praise, honor, glory, and majesty.
I could talk forever about the people we have met, the ways we have seen the Lord at work, but it all comes down to the fact that Jesus Christ is alive and at work in the hearts of His people. The church, whether in Southern California, Maine, or China, all are united under His banner. We anxiously await our next stop, and those following, until we finally reach our home, to be with our wonderful Savior for eternity.
God is looking down, searching the earth, His eyes never ceasing to oversee His flock, the great Shepherd guiding His sheep. Psalm 23 has taken new meaning to me recently. I see His loving, protective hand, how the Lord leads us to living water, and pastures green with food. All we have to do is follow Him, and He never leads us astray. May we continue to follow wherever He leads.
Once again, I just want to say thank you to everyone who has hosted us, fed us, supported us financially, and helped us in the work of preaching the Gospel and equipping the saints. The work here could not have gone on without the support of those faithful servants, those willing to listen to God's calling in their lives to go, to give, and to pray. There are too many to name, but you know who you are. The encouraging emails, phone calls, visits, and times in ministry together have made this trip phenomenal. God has blessed time and again.
I know there are many that will continue the work to reach the lost with the Good News. I pray that their passion for reaching the lost is infective, until all God's children see the need to tell every creature about Jesus. I remember the phrase that Justin has used so often "Evangelism is not something you do, it is who you are" Those who are reconciled to God are all able and accountable as witnesses of the joy of our salvation. 2 Cor. 5:16-21
If we can be of service in any other way, please let us know. If you would like our training materials for group study, they are free for the taking. Just drop me an email and I will let you know where to download them. This is by no means "our ministry" but rather the privileged calling that we have in Christ Jesus. I pray that each person that receives this note continues to walk "in His steps" That is our prayer, that we don't rely on our own reasoning or our plans, but daily walk how our Lord desires.
Just a sheep in His flock,
Mark for the Cowperthwaites
P.S. Thank you for taking the time to read this, I know it was long. I just had so much to say, and could go on forever. Lucky for you all, I need to go eat supper and stop typing. I will continue to post updates on my blog and email ministry updates. If you want your name added or dropped from the list, just email me and let me know.

Updates for the week

This week we had opportunity to go many different places with the Gospel. We were in El Cajon, San Diego, Harbison Canyon, and more. We have had a variety of people desiring to go out and work with us to bring the lost to Christ. I am always amazed at how God uses the young, old, shy and bold, all alike for His purposes. All we need to be is willing. We must allow the Lord to overcome our feebleness and fill us with His strength. It just reminds me that it is not we who are able on our own, but only by God's strength, His power, and His leading that we are able to share our wonderful Savior with others. Knowing that it is the Holy Spirit that works in us, to will and to do His pleasure, we can do anything He asks of us.
We had a father and 3 sons go out to witness both in their neighborhood and in a neighboring town. This family has been a great blessing to us this past week especially. Sara and the kids visited while Justin and I went out to witness with 2 of the sons, 14 and 16 years old. The following day, the father and 18 year old son labored alongside us. This family has invested time and effort to raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. It is great to see the desire to reach out with the Gospel being encouraged and modelled by parents.
Another family spanning 3 generations has also been a great blessing to us. The first generation has spent much time with Justin and I, with our families and on the streets. Three of their adult children have gone out with us with a passion to reach their local communities with the Gospel . We have been both in their neighborhoods and the local church areas, and have been accompanied more than once by the third generation. I believe that the faithfulness of years serving the Lord has kept this family close. We praise God for this family.
I am continually reminded of the great responsibility and privilege it is to model Christ-like behavior when I see families serving God together. That has also been the focus of many that we have talked to in our time in California. Another family with 7 grown children have been brought up to me more than once. The father was a faithful servant of God. He followed God's calling, both in his homeland and to other countries, yet his greatest work was seen in the eyes of his children. They are a living testimony to his faithfulness and God's. I pray that my life reflects this dedication to God's calling of ministry to my family.
Though grown with children of his own, our friend still talks often of his dad. Our brother speaks of how the encouragement and example of a father/husband dedicated to be all God wanted him to be. Though none of us are perfect, we can certainly look to the example of those who have gone before. In hearing of life growing up on the mission field(foreign or domestic), we have learned lessons from the experienced. We have been challenged and encouraged to keep our eyes on Jesus, to do things according to God's Word, and to remember to enjoy our children. Children are a heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is His reward. What a beautiful picture of God's family.
We are so thankful to have met so many that are co-laborers. What a wonderful family we have, this family of God. Worldwide, in every country, city, village, and town, there are men, women, and children who take the call to serve the Lord seriously. They are faithful to His calling and excited to see God at work. What a joy to serve the living God, to know that He is everything we need, and everything we could ever hope for!
God has placed these families in this area and they are determined to work to reach their surrounding communities for Jesus. I am so encouraged by the desire we have seen from people here to reach the lost. In our 2 months here, we have met so many that love the Lord and desire to serve Him. I could not possibly tell of all those stories, but know that there are many more that hunger and thirst for righteousness. Of that, there is no doubt. God's people are being mobilized. They are following His lead, and I cannot wait to see what He will do for His glory!

More quotes from the past

I have enjoyed these quotes and hope that you enjoy them too.~Mark

I am afraid that the schools will prove the very gates of hell, unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures and engraving them in the heart of the youth.s- Martin Luther

Let the wife make the husband glad to come home, and let him make her sorry to see him leave.- Martin Luther

“Not called!” did you say? “Not heard the call,” I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help. Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their father’s house and bid their brothers and sisters, and servants and masters not to come there. And then look Christ in the face, whose mercy you have professed to obey, and tell him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish his mercy to the world.
William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army

“I tell you, brethren, if mercies and if judgments do not convert you, God has no other arrows in His quiver.”
Robert Murray M’Cheyne

“At the moment I put the bread and wine into those dark hands, once stained with the blood of cannibalism, now stretched out to receive and partake the emblems and seals of the Redeemer’s love, I had a foretaste of the joy of glory that well nigh broke my heart to pieces. I shall never taste a deeper bliss, till I gaze on the glorified face of Jesus himself.”

Updates for the week

Brothers and sisters,
I am sorry that it has been so long since updates. We have been very busy. With the "vacation" in San Diego, the Cowperthwaite family got some rest and a great chance to see parts of the area that we would not have otherwise. Thank you to all who provided meals and more, encouragement and fellowship. We truly feel like part of the body here.
This past week we were able to share with a youth group from Sacramento area. The group of about 25 teens and their leaders had a good time and talked about our love for Christ being the motivator for sharing the Gospel.
Monday night Carlos and Ken invited us to join them at the Rescue Mission. I (Mark) preached for about 1/2 hour, sharing about my experience of salvation and the call on my life for reaching others with the Gospel, coupled with the ministry of equipping others to do the same. We are truly blessed to be able to serve the Lord in this way.
Justin also spoke at the mission. The messages were both well received and many came to talk afterwards, pray together, and shared about their own lives and testimonies. It was a great time to be able to minister to these men, who are always appreciative of our visits. Pray that more men will desire to become involved in this ministry.
The door to door work has continued both in El Cajon with many brothers and sisters from Grace Fellowship and Laurel, and in Harbison Canyon with some sisters desiring to reach their community there with the good news of salvation. Many of the folks we talk to have expressed a desire to reach their own communities. We have been greatly encouraged here in Southern California. God is at work in the hearts and lives of His people.
We all visited the Spanish speaking meeting at Laurel on Saturday for their Easter drama and song service. Brother Ralph concluded the meeting with a Gospel message. While I don't speak Spanish, I did get a lot of the words in the songs and the message. It was a blessing to our family. We got to meet many folks that we had not met before in our time here. What a great work God is doing in the various ministries at the local bodies of believers that we have had the privilege of working with.
Sunday, Sara got to share and answer questions with the ladies Sunday School in the Spanish meeting. Liz De La Vega was very accomodating to translate for Sara. The ladies were very interested and responsive. It was nice for Sara to be able to share about her experiences as a wife and mother, and colaborer in the Gospel. Sara and Jocelin, along with the children truly are an integral part of the ministry we do.
Mark spoke with the men at the Spanish meeting. We had a great time talking about God's Word, who Christ is, and what God means to us personally. We focused on our responsibility to the Lord and about sharing the hope we have of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. Jimmy De La Vega translated and many men contributed to the discussion. It was such an encouragement to see so many dedicated brothers.
We have much on the schedule for the week and both families will have visiting family from Maine the week of 19-25. We will still be active in the ministry, but able to have time with our families from back home. Sara's mom and sister will be here, as will Jocelin's mother and father.
We (Cowperthwaites) will be leaving April 27, early in the morning, headed to Ohio for family visits and then Kentucky mid May. Pray that we will be safe on our journey and find ways to be effective in reaching the lost along our way. God has put so many opportunities in our path and we pray that we are faithful to use them all for His honor and glory.
Serving our risen Savior,

Great quotes from the distant past

I was enjoying some thoughts from George Whitefield, Spurgeon and others and decided to post some of them here. They are broad in range, but all point to Biblical truths. Please feel free to post comments on them, or give other quotes for us to enjoy.

Mark Cowperthwaite

“Avoid a sugared gospel as you would shun sugar of lead. Seek the gospel which rips up and tears and cuts and wounds and hacks and even kills, for that is the gospel that makes alive again. And when you have found it, give good heed to it. Let it enter into your inmost being. As the rain soaks into the ground, so pray the Lord to let his gospel soak into your soul.” Spurgeon

Nothing is more generally known than our duties which belong to Christianity; yet, how amazing is it, nothing is less practiced? Whitefield

It is a poor sermon that gives no offense; that neither makes the hearer displeased with himself nor with the preacher- George Whitefield

“Let this be to you the mark of true gospel preaching - where Christ is everything, and the creature is nothing; where it is salvation all of grace, through the work of the Holy Spirit applying to the soul the precious blood of Jesus.” Spurgeon

“You know that we all have our besetments,” says one. What do you mean by that?
Some sin that you often fall into? Do you call that a besetting sin? If I were to walk
to-night across Clapham Common, and half-a-dozen men stopped me, I should say
that I was beset; but if at an appointed place a party met me regularly, I should not
say that I was beset. And so, the sin which a man often indulges in is not his
besetting sin: it is his favourite sin, a sin that will be his ruin- Spurgeon

Learn in confession to be honest with God. Do not give fair names to foul sins; call
them what you will, they will smell no sweeter. Spurgeon

“It is an undoubted truth that every doctrine that comes from God, leads to God; and that which doth not tend to promote holiness is not of God”- George Whitefield

This week in San Diego

Wednesday, April 1, 2009
Brothers and sisters
Our family wishes, first of all, to say "thank you" for the outpouring of love from our family at Laurel Bible Chapel. God's people have rallied around our family in help, care, and poured out themselves in so many ways in the spirit of love and unity through Christ.
We will be staying in downtown San Diego this coming week. The Ramet family has generously offered for us to take a break from our crowded camper and get a chance to take some time away in a timeshare apartment. This will be a great time to see the city and meet more people,to be witnesses for Christ in an area we have not yet been.
Other families have offered food and many other ways of showing love to our family as we continue to grieve the loss of our Joshua. We feel loved and want to express our appreciation to all those who continue to uphold us in prayer. It means so much to us to know that you are taking time before the Lord on our behalf.
While we are still working through our sorrow, we also know that God has purpose for our being here. We continued to pray through it all that the Lord would reveal His plans for our ministry here. So, we continue to go and tell others how they can be made right with God, how they can know for sure what their eternal fate will be, either in Heaven by faith in the Lord Jesus or in Hell, separated from God. We pray that everyone will be saved, but know that the fruit of our labor is in God's hands. We are but servants, playing a role, planting, watering, or harvesting. We pray that God's harvest is plentiful and are blessed greatly by being able to have some part in reaching those around us.
This past week, Justin and I took Ken Bradley, Carlos Hurtado, Ron and Elizabeth Mears, along with two homeschool families out to the community to reach people with the Gospel at their homes. People have been generally receptive, with some desiring to learn the truth from God's Word. Some reject and hardened in their hearts, but our place is simply to obey, to go and faithfully proclaim that which Jesus told us to say. We rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us, to work in the hearts of the unsaved, and to give us the strength and wisdom to do God's will rather than our own.
Mark and Sara met with the mid week group at the Mattix home on Wednesday. We all talked about the need and urgency to reach the lost for Christ. Some work with children, others with young people, but we all recognize our need to be ambassadors for Christ. All of us who have been reconciled to God through Christ should have the words of life flowing from our mouths and demonstrated in our lives. Each of us has opportunity to speak boldly of the love of God revealed to us through grace by faith.
Today, Ken, Carlos, Justin and Mark will be out knocking on doors in El Cajon. We map out streets and go back to the homes where nobody was home. Today, we will be going back on streets previously visited, to attempt to reach those homes where we previously could not. It is important to us to make sure that we are thorough, prayerfully trying to reach someone at each door to offer them literature, a CD, and to engage in conversation face to face.
It is our desire to reach every home in the area, and sometimes second and third visits are necessary. We also follow up with folks who have heard the Gospel, seeking to disciple and encourage those who do come to know Christ. There are many who ask us to come back, to visit, and sometimes these visits are the start of home Bible studies or bring new believers into the local church body.
This desire to build up the local body is why it is so important for local believers to be out with us, to establish a relationship, rather than a hit-and-run by the out-of-towners. We seek to help the local body, to grow the body of Christ, not just to preach and run. So, we pray that even those who are not comfortable will step out in faith and come with us. What is comfortable is usually NOT what God wants from us!
Street preaching is certainly not for everyone, but we all do have the responsibility to witness. I always say "don't knock it until you've tried it" None of us started out being comfortable with knocking on doors, but many have realized their gifts and abilities only after leaving their comfort zone in faith desiring God's will be done.
God works wonders in the lives of those who will open themselves up to be used however He sees fit. I know it doesn't come easy for me. I am shy and want to be liked, not wanting to be offensive. But, the truth about sin and our separation from God is offensive to those who are living according to the course of this world. A theif or murderer is not going to be happy to hear about the punishment due to them, but the offering of payment for sin through Christ is the only way to avoid the punishment that God has promised. So, even though it is offensive, we must go, to warn the lost soul of the promised end to their time on earth. We all stand condemned, so let's be faithful to show those condemned souls the way to life and eternity with God.
Our family will be taking some time off this coming week, but will also be in the neighborhoods of El Cajon, at the bus stops witnessing with Ken and Carlos in San Diego. We will hopefully be finding more opportunities to share with familiies and small groups about our calling, about the responsibility of all believers to spread the Gospel. Most important is giving all glory, praise, and honor to Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. If you have a venue where we can share the ministry, or to help equip others, please call or email. Our desire is simply to be used however the Lord leads.
Mark and Justin will both be speaking at the San Diego Rescue Mission. Carlos and Ken have asked us to share. Please pray that we will be empty vessels, fit for use by the Potter. Pray that the Holy Spirit will give us the words to say, that we will be used to help draw the men there to an understanding of their place before God. We pray that we will be used to draw men to salvation, understanding that Christ is the only way, the truth, and the life offered to all who will believe.
I would especially like to encourage any of the men(they only allow men in,sorry ladies) from Laurel to come out and support this work at the mission. Once a month, they give an hour for Laurel to come and open God's Word to the men there. This is one of the many ministries of Laurel, and we are happy to participate, and would love to see more of the body come and take part in reaching out to the men. I know that the brothers that do this ministry would love to have others help, to be encouraged, and to band together as brothers for the sake of reaching the lost.
Please feel free to call anytime. We would love to answer questions, visit, and be of encouragement to the believers at Laurel. We, (Cowperthwaites) will be in town until April 27, and the Humes will probably leave May 4.
Sorry for the long update. I just had to get that all out in print. We are excited to see how God will use His people here.

Faithful witness- spring hill

Witnessing defined - to bear testimony, to testify.
Luke 24:46-48. And He said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things”

The disciples and those others that saw Jesus’ risen body certainly had a lot to say. They were joyfully proclaiming that Jesus is risen!!  We have so much to share, so much to say, and there are so many that have never heard of the punishment of Hell, the penalty of sin, or of a Savior’s love that paid the penalty to save sinners such as we are. The grace and mercy shown to us by a Holy God is such that we shouldn’t be able to keep it to ourselves.

2 Cor 5:15-21
He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf. 16Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Not counting  their trespasses(using them OR numbering them)- don’t only witness to people like ourselves(truckers, prostitutes, homeless, punks and skateboarders) Jesus died for all sins and committed to all of  us the work of ambassadors (says it twice, must be important), making an appeal through US, we BEG you to be reconciled to God. This is not some weak attempt at bringing up spiritual things over the course of a 5 year relationship, but a bold proclamation showing the love of God, not worrying about offending someone.

If you were given $1,000 every time you witnessed to someone, would you be more zealous about evangelism? The truthful answers from many in assemblies would not be pretty. If anyone would do it for money, they are serving money more than God. Matthew 6 tells us that if we seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, then “all these things” shelter, food, clothing. So many today have never truly lived by faith, serving God rather than lining their pockets, retirement accounts, and investment portfolios. It does not take any great amount of faith to become a full time worker without soliciting funds. If God has called you, He will provide.

We have nothing to fear as long as we are doing the will of God. If God can speak the universe into existence and make complex, intelligent, man out of dust, then can we not trust Him to handle these simple things?  The materialism in society, including the church is one of the largest reasons for disobedience to the Word of God.

Guy Rice Doud hits home with this quote  “Our Lord needs no secret agents. Those who are not willing to confess Christ publicly are not willing to confess Christ at all. Perhaps acceptance of Christ begins as a very personal and private experience, but it can never stay that way.”

If you care about someone, you cannot just sit and watch them go to hell for the sake of your comfort. This is a challenge, and does not come naturally, but only through fervent prayer, desiring that the Lord give us His heart, His desires and not our own. We need to pray that God will give us a passion for lost souls. This isn’t cancer or AIDS, we have the cure, now we just need to give it out. Some will refuse to hear it, but we would be derelict in our duty as followers of Jesus if we don’t even try.

What are we afraid of, persecution? Jeremiah 20:9 Persecution almost persuaded Jeremiah not to speak in God’s name, but God’s Word burned so hot within Jeremiah that he could not keep it to himself. How much more so, as we are not our own, but we are bought with a price. It’s a very high price at that, the sacrifice of God’s perfect and righteous Son on our behalf.

We cannot dwell on past victories- we tend to put up our memories of what we did for Christ years ago like shrines on the wall. The nets used to fish for men have been dry cleaned, pressed, and put up to remind us of what we have done in the past. Some sort of trophy, pictures of our big game. Why do we tend to think that we are done serving God. If you aren’t dead, you aren’t finished. Until all are saved, we have work to do. God left you here to serve Him, every day until He calls us home, we are to be about our Father’s business.

“We used to... remember when we... “Get out of the past and do something today. I keep hearing “ we used to have Gospel meetings” and “remember when that evangelist came and he went out in the streets and knocked on doors  to talk to people” and “this church has been a rock in our community for decades” Get out of the past and see what God wants you to do today and then DO IT!

The Lord  uses those who know they are weak...  1 Cor 2 tells us about Paul being poor at speaking, fearful, weak and with much trembling yet he was called on by God to spread the Gospel, and so he did. “when I am weak, then I am strong” sounds opposed to human reasoning. It is, we are not talking about human reasoning, but God’s reasoning. He wants us to live for Him, by His strength, and according to His will.

Some will argue that this is not their calling, but we are talking about witnessing. The work of an evangelist outlined in Ephesians 4 is the one who equips his fellow believers to go and fulfill that which Jesus told us all to do. This is not for the full time pastor, the elders only, nor is it a call just to those who feel like it. Obedience is not a calling, but a command. This command is repeated throughout Scripture, and is never directed at any certain group of people.

He is our only strength, our only hope, and the one who deserves our worship, praise, OUR LIVES!  The song says “all to Jesus I surrender, humbly at His feet I bow...”

Will you surrender today? It will cost you, but the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus is worth it. Can we sing the song honestly, and live it out each day? We can through the power of God in Christ Jesus.

Faith in action

Adapted from a sermon by Justin Humes teaching on faith
Mark 11:20-24,Matthew 21:21,Luke 17:5-6,John 15:16,1 John 3:21-22,1 John 5:14-15

1. We must be right before God "if our heart condemns us" have we given ourselves to sin?
Confidence before God comes from a clear conscience, and because we... do the things that are pleasing in His        sight. James 5:16-18
2. 1 John 5 According to His will, we have confidence. "we know" Ephesians 1:9, John 15:15
All things I have heard of the Father, I have made known to you.

A. Does this match with Scripture- to know this we must know the Word of God.
B. Has God led you in prayer regarding this- to know this we must be in fervent prayer, looking for the leading of
        the Holy Spirit.
C. What are our motives- glory for ourselves, greed, to "consume it of our own lusts"
D. Without doubt- God is able, not just believe, but trust that it will happen John 11:24
James 1:5-8 Wisdom is truth from God's perspective, absolute divine truth, not our own human understanding or
ability to reason. Not double-minded seeking our own and God's. We cannot have both, but must submit
our own will to that of God.

Hebrews 11- These men and women were not great of their own accord, but were great in faith in an all mighty
all powerful God that they knew could deliver on His promises.

David- did not act in fear when facing Goliath, but ran after him.
Faith is something to act on, not a feeling, but a decided ability to step out knowing that God is in control

Faith without works is dead- Proverbs 14:23 "In all labor there is profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty."

Noah didn't wait for the rain to start, but spent 200 years building a boat to save people from a flood, when
they had never even heard of rain before that time.
The Israelite priests could not make the waters recede by standing on the shore, but when they stepped into
the water, their faith was exercised and God fulfilled His commands. It was not until they were willing to step            out that they truly put their trust in God.

Example from "Facing the Giants" Two farmers, both dealing with a drought, prayed for rain. One went out and prepared his fields to receive the rain, the other did not. Which one had more faith?

Peter saw Jesus walking on the water, took initiative and asked Jesus to call him out of the boat. He took it upon himself to follow Jesus in a way that made no sense to the human mind. Yet, he exercised that faith and got out of the boat. Yes, Peter did stumble, but because of his faith in Christ, his willingness to put trust in Jesus beyond his knowledge of gravity and the he COULD NOT walk on water made him get out and walk where no man besides Jesus Himself ever dared to walk before.

what is the gospel

What is the gospel?  5 points:

1. Who God is.  God is holy (perfect), creator, sets the standard.  God is who He is, not who we decide He is!  The Bible is God’s revelation of Himself to us.

2. Who man is.  Rebelled against God by choice, sinner (not in a generic sense, but individually). The Law is the place to start with someone who doesn’t think they’re that bad.
Rom. 3:10, 23    [Scriptures are few & given for example only - it will be best
Ex. 20        for you to search out your own]

3. The penalty for sin.  Death (eternal in Hell) is the punishment for our rebellion. (not purgatory, not annihilation, no 2nd chances with reincarnation)
    Heb. 9:27
    Rom. 6:23a
    Rev. 20:11-15

4. What God did. Took on a body of flesh, lived a sinless life, died a death undeserved, paid the penalty due to us for our sins.
    Jn. 3:16;  Rom 5:8;  2 Cor. 5:21

5. What man must do. Repent (change mind, see self as sinful and unable to save himself) and believe (place trust in Christ’s death on his behalf, and resurrection as promise of eternal life).
    Acts 17:30-31; Rom. 10:9-10

Don’t hurry on to the next point if someone doesn’t agree with your current point.  The order is important in understanding salvation.

Remember, we are not out selling people a ticket to heaven!  We are warning them of the wrath that will come upon them as reasonable judgment for their sins, and introducing them to the Person of Jesus Christ.

Stress the urgency of making this decision.  We won’t get a second chance to change our minds after we die & we’re not guaranteed tomorrow.  We never know when our time will come to face God in judgment.

Our job is to bring people to the point of making a decision (not to make it for them).  We present them with the facts of the gospel, answer their questions, point them to Christ, pray for them… but ultimately, the rest is between them and the Holy Spirit.
Sharing the Gospel

Be cheerful, kind, courteous and loving.  A sincere concern should be evident in our voices and on our faces.  Dress neatly - it reflects on the message.  Wear a smile - we bring the words of eternal life.  Be confident in attitude and speech - remember whose ambassadors we are!

Don’t debate people over secondary issues.  Many will try to rope you into distractions like the reliability of the Bible, evolution vs. creation, denominational issues, catholic issues, etc.  The list is endless, but the purpose is the same - distraction from the main point: where will you be after you die?  I’m not aware of anyone who ever was argued into salvation.  Answer questions briefly, even sidestep as necessary, then get back to the point: sin, righteousness and judgment. [read 1 Cor. 2:1-5]

Overcome your fears.  Most of the time they’re irrational anyway.  People aren’t usually waiting to bite your head off.  Intellectual debaters will usually accept your answer of “I don’t know about that” before you return to the gospel.  You don’t need to know everything about someone’s beliefs to tell them about yours.  You won’t get arrested for telling people the gospel or handing out tracts!  *** Courage is not the lack of fear, but the overcoming of it! ***  2 Tim. 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity [fear], but of power and love and discipline.”  By the way, every seasoned evangelist I’ve ever met says the same thing: it’s always difficult.  That fear never stops needing to be conquered.  It does get easier, but only by doing it.  Even Paul in Eph. 6:19-20 requests prayer that he would “make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,” and that “I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.”

Use words that people can understand (not Christian-ise).  Bible terms are ok to use, just remember to define them.  Use examples, visuals, word pictures, etc. to make yourself clear.

Ask lots of questions.  It is an easy habit to do all the talking when preaching the gospel, but you’ll never know where people are coming from, whether or not they understand, or what their specific questions are unless you listen to what they have to say.  W questions are better than yes/no questions.

When knocking on doors: (Acts 5:42)seek to start a conversation, don’t just hit and run.  You will gauge pretty quick if they are willing to talk or not.  Ask lots of questions. Pray walking between houses.  Be thorough: knock on each door, be orderly, keep track of where you start and stop, takes lots of notes!  Those contact notes will be a great blessing for doing follow up: if they go to church, any particular questions or prayer requests, etc.  GET THE ADDRESS!!!  A first name is very helpful.  Write it all down.  It can make a difference in eternity!
Be persistent & faithful with follow-up visits.  There are many testimonies of saints whose hearts were won to the Lord through the persistence of someone returning again and again to their door.

When handing out tracts, packets, or anything else: never ask if someone would like one.  Simply say, “Here’s a gift for you.”, “Here’s some good news.”, “Here’s an important question for you to consider.”, “Did you get one of these?”, or something like that.  If you ask, it gives them a good excuse to say no.  Remember, what we have to give is a matter of eternal life or death - it’s important!  If handing out to passers-by and several in a row reject, stop and wait a minute before starting again.

When with someone preaching in public: face the speaker and pay attention.  You are an example, others will stop to see what’s so interesting.  Don’t hand out tracts while the preacher is speaking - the listeners are now readers.  Don’t leave the group to chase down people who leave (have people outside the immediate group to do that).  DO start a conversation with the person next to you when the preacher is finished.  People will often talk to others in the crowd rather than go up to the preacher to ask questions.  Don’t try to silence a heckler - let the preacher handle him (otherwise you become a distraction).

Evangelism is not a job or a program - it is who you are.  It’s a by-product of your faith and your focus in life.
Where to Share?

Events & locations: Paul used synagogues, marketplaces, the streets, the temple, prisons, courtrooms, even riots as opportunities to preach the gospel.  Why break our necks & spend a fortune trying to create our own crowds - use the crowds the world brings together for us.  Anywhere you see a group of people makes for a good place to preach the gospel or hand out tracts.  It is perfectly legal to do so in any public place in this country.  When in doubt, do it anyway.  Someone will request that you stop before they throw you in jail.  J

Make your own opportunities: Knock on doors in your neighborhood.  Invite people for something fun - friends and neighbors over for a Saturday BBQ.  Get a group together to go sing hymns at nursing homes (works all year - not just at Christmas).  Rent a booth at the local fair.  Be creative - God is!
*** Warning: inviting people to events at your church building is akin to inviting criminals to the police station.  You can chrome plate the bars, carpet the cells, have an international police speaker and a great police band, but you’re still not going to get many criminals to come to the police station.  The church is where the saints gather together.  The world is where we go out into with the gospel.  They’ll come when they’re converted, but probably not before (not if we’re preaching things like sin, righteousness and judgment).

I’ll use this opportunity to pitch door-to-door visitation.  It is the most thorough way possible for us to fulfill the Great Commission:
By going house to house, we can honestly say we have preached the gospel to every creature.
If no one’s home, make note and keep returning until someone is.
You meet people you might never otherwise at stores, at work, on the street, etc.
People connect better when you associate with their community.
People are more at ease at the door of their own home than in many other places you might approach them with the gospel.
Leaving something for them to read allows even more opportunity for the Holy Spirit to continue working after you’ve left.
At the door, you only deal with one person at a time (usually).
Follow-up is possible in ways not possible with other public witnessing (you know where they live).

Everyday life: There are lots of places to meet people that are perfect for telling people the gospel - at work, in line at the grocery store, standing around pumping gas, eating dinner at a restaurant - everywhere you are!  We are ambassadors for Christ - that’s our calling as saints.
Tracts aren’t just for bringing to doors and distributing on the street.  Give them and leave them everywhere you go.  Each tract is a mini gospel preacher that can go places we never could, and continue to speak to people long after we’ve gone home at night.  I love to use tracts, but lets not think that’s all we’re called to do.  The gospel coming from our mouth is a powerful tool, which is then enhanced by tracts.

Now seems a good time to address ‘Friendship Evangelism.’  I whole-heartedly endorse it, so long as you really mean using friendships as opportunity for evangelism.
More often, though, people say ‘Friendship Evangelism’ when they mean ‘Lifestyle Evangelism,’ which is an excuse for people to live as a good testimony without opening their mouths with the gospel.  “Faith comes by hearing.”
Or they say ‘Friendship Evangelism’ which in practice is ‘Friendship-Today-Evangelism-Someday.’  We make friends with them now, then at some point when we’ve built up a good relationship with the person, we’ll tell them the gospel.  The problem is that ‘someday’ never comes, because the longer we’re silent, the harder it becomes to open our mouths with the gospel. “What fellowship does light have with darkness?”
‘Friendship Evangelism’ is telling someone the gospel right up front, and then being friendly with them and showing them the testimony of our lives, which backs up our claim of knowing Christ as our Savior.

Summary: Where to share?  Where not?

Do we regard every contact we make as an opportunity to save someone from eternal damnation?  “making the most of your time, because the days are evil” (Eph 5:16)

Evangelism is not a job or a program - it is who you are.  It’s a by-product of your faith and your focus in life. “the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.” (Matt 12:34)
How to Prepare

Get on your knees - every day!  Ask God to give you compassion & boldness & zeal for reaching the lost.  “Ask and it will be given to you.”  God is delighted to give us a heart like His.

Open your Bible - every day!  Hunger for His Word. Let Him speak to you, convict you, open your eyes and heart to His thoughts and His ways.  Study the words of our Master Teacher in the gospels.  Study the sermons preached in Acts.  We have a sure guide for this endeavor.

The first 2 lead to this - offer ourselves up as a clean vessel for use by God.  The testimony of our lives must match the testimony of our words.  Hypocrisy in churches is an oft-quoted objection to Christianity.  And sin blocks us from hearing the Holy Spirit’s leading when we desire to witness for Him.

Read biographies of bold, faithful servants of Christ who have gone before.  (This isn’t hero worship - we have such a biblical example in Hebrews 11)  Go for the classics: Hudson Taylor, George Muller, D.L. Moody, Charles Spurgeon, Charles Stanley, etc.  Then remember we might not have the same gifts as these men, but we are indwelt by the same Spirit who empowered them in their lives, and are promised that very same power when we are witnesses.

Get out and start doing it!  Grab a friend and go.  There’s no teacher like experience.

The order of these is important: do all of them at once!
The Need for Preaching the Gospel

On October 10, 1856, Hudson Taylor was traveling by a small boat on the river from Shanghai to Ningpo.  He was in his cabin when he heard a loud splash and heard the cry of man-overboard.  He sped to the deck and looked around, immediately missing his Chinese friend ‘Peter.’
“Yes,” exclaimed the boatmen unconcernedly, “it was over there he went down.”
Hudson searched all around, but saw nothing.  Then he spotted some fishermen with a dragnet - just the thing needed!
“Come,” he cried as his hope revived, “come and drag over this spot.  A man is drowning!”
“Veh bin,” was the amazing reply: “It is not convenient.”
“Don’t talk of convenience! Quickly come, or it will be too late!”
“We are busy fishing.”
“Never mind your fishing!  Come - only come at once!  I will pay you well.”
“How much will you give us?”
“Five dollars!  Only don’t stand talking.  Save life without delay!”
“Too little!” they shouted across the water. “We will not come for less than thirty dollars.”
“But I have not so much with me! I will give you all I’ve got.”
“And how much may that be?”
“Oh, I don’t know.  About 14 dollars.”
At this, they finally came.  Their first pass brought up the missing man in their net.  Despite Hudson’s efforts to revive him, it was too late.  It was only too plain that his life had fled, sacrificed to the callous indifference of those who might have easily saved it.

Hudson related this event to a conference back in England 9 years later.  A burning sense of indignation swept over the great audience.  Could it be that anywhere on earth people were to be found so utterly callous and selfish!  But the earnest voice of Hudson Taylor went on:
“Is the body, then, of so much more value than the soul?  We condemn those heathen fishermen.  We say they were guilty of the man’s death - because they could easily have saved him, and did not do it.  But what of the millions whom we leave to perish, and that eternally?  What of the plain command, ‘Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature,’ and the searching question inspired by God Himself, ‘If you forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; if you say, ‘Behold, we knew it not;’ does not He that ponders the heart consider it? And He that keeps your soul does not He know it?  And shall He not render to every man according to his works?’ ” [Prov. 24:11-12]

What else does Scripture say about our responsibility: (let me just read)

Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.  (Matt. 4:19)

What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops. (Matt. 10:27)

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20)

Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. (Mark 16:15)

Repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.  You are witnesses of these things.  (Luke 24:47-48)

Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest. (John 4:35)

The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.  Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.  (Matt. 9:36-37)

Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.  (John 20:21)

You shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.  (Acts 1:8)

For whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.  How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed?  How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?  How will they preach unless they are sent?  Just as it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!’  (Rom. 10:13-15)

For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for I am under compulsion; for woe is me if I do not preach the gospel.  (1 Cor. 9:16)

Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He committed to us the word of reconciliation.  Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (2 Cor. 5:18-20)

Now as for you, son of man, I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel; so you will hear a message from My mouth and give them warning from Me.  When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require from your hand. (Ezek. 33:7-8)

And for those who don’t believe this applies to us, Paul says…
Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men.  For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God.  (Acts 20:26-27)

Tell me Hudson Taylor didn’t agree, also.

As Ray Comfort has said, we as Christians have not been given tickets for a pleasure cruise headed for heaven, but rather called up to serve on a battleship stationed at the gates of Hell.

How can we call Him Lord and not do what He commands?  If we love Him, will we not obey His commands?  Are we truly seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness?

What we spend our time and our money on, much more than our words, reveals our priorities.  (for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also - Matt. 6:21)  Do our priorities match those of our Lord and Savior?
I’m not asking for your money, though. God wants more than that.  I’m echoing God’s call for your very lives!!!  He gave His life to rescue each one of us.  Will we give just a portion of ours to rescue those around us?

150,000 people die in the world every day, most of them headed to an eternal separation from God in Hell.

What are you doing to warn them, to rescue them, to beg them on behalf of Christ to be reconciled to God?

Or is it ‘inconvenient’?  (like the Chinese fishermen)
Or are you too fearful? (aka ashamed of the gospel, more afraid of men than of God)

We will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ one day and give an answer for what has been entrusted to us.  What excuses will we use then?
